I heard the new Audioslave single on the radio the other day. Didn't catch the title but I do know it's coming off of their upcoming album. So I'm listening to it and I'm liking what I'm hearing then all of a sudden from out of nowhere comes one of Tom Morello's patented guitar-noise freak-outs and, I really must say, it kinda ruined the song.

Admittedly I will confess to loving both Rage and Soundgarden and I was intrigued by the possibilities of having Chris Cornell join the remaining members of Rage. Their first album came out and I really liked it. Lots of good, catchy songs on there. Second album comes out and I think I've listened to it once or twice before shelving it as there was just a total lack of hooks on that cd. I'm hoping that it was just a case of sophmore jinx and I am really anticipating the new cd coming out soon.

Really though, man, it seems as though sometimes the band doesn't know which direction to take, as in Morello's seemingly out-of-place guitar solos as I mentioned before. And that's what bugs me about this band.

I don't like Soundgarden because Chris Cornell's voice bugs me, I don't like Rage Againt the Machine because Tom Morello's solos are the biggest pieces of crap ever to suffice in rap/rock.

Zach De La Rocha (spelling, anyone?) was a great energy guy on stage, and the bassist of RATM was quite uh..entertaining to listen to too. I just can't stand the guitar at all times =/

...ok WTF? Are you insane? Cornell's voice is one of the best remaining voices around from the Alternative era, including Laney Stanley (RIP). He has a high pitch and he is so talented as a rhythm guitarrist. And Morello's solos are called creativity, not the usual pentatonic scale solo...

Um, no I am not insane, and I still think his voice is stupid and I hate him. So what? I can hate what I want and you can't stop me.

You might not thing Agalloch is the greatest, but I do. Probably one of the best Progressive Folk Metal bands ever. If you don't like them, do I think you're insane? No, maybe you just don't like the vocals that they provide.

I hate this so called "alternative era" and unless something really spectacular shows up, I won't delge deep into the genre.

Hehehe Opeth your opinion made me jump outta my chair, that's it. And besides you were maybe 2 or 3 years old when the Alternative movement came from Seattle. Yes I can't stop you, but I disagree with you. Cornell's voice is great and to let you know Morello is not in my preferred guitarrist list. I don't blame him for overused whammy bar, but the scratching effect is great when done with whammy bar and wah wah pedals at the same time. James Iha's solo from Zero is a mess on Emin but you tell me... does it sounds like a normal pentatonic solo? No it doesn't. Agalloch is a great band and that's for sure, but like you said is not the greatest band... different tastes for everyone. Didn't meant any harm before

I agree that Chris Cornell's voice is one of the best in music. I mean, he's getting up there in age and he can't quite bring it as he once did but he is still much, much better than most in my opinion.

I also agree that age has nothing to do with one's taste in music. Hell, there are kids on these forums who profess a love of Led Zep, Pink Floyd etc and that is some old shit. If the music is good then it becomes kind of timeless in a way. I mean, throw the radio on and you're bound to hear some Zep at some point in the day.

As for someone who is old enough to have lived through the "grunge" era, let me just say that Nirvana's Nevermind came out when I was in grade 12 and it totally changed my life! I still listen to it to this day and it is still as powerful as it was back then when I was just a confused teenager. Prior to that I was a total metal-head and while I still worship Metallica, the whole grunge thing led my musical tastes in an entirely different direction.

As for me right now my favorite artist is Beck. No question. For my money there is no other band/artist who has produced as many consistently stellar albums as he has. Too bad I live in the middle of the Canadian prairie and have been unsuccessful in seeing him live, cause that would be the shit!

Anyways, here's some other albums that have meant something to me from the past, what, 20 years or so . . .

Iron Maiden - Powerslave. The first album I ever bought. Loved that song "Aces High".

Metallica - Master of Puppets. The first album that I actually worshipped. Turned me on to so many other metal bands. "Leper Messiah" and it's 5/4 time signature . . . wow. I've worn out a few copies of this album.

Nirvana - Nevermind. As I said, I was in grade 12 when I first heard this and suddenly I realized there was this whole sound that encompassed heavy guitars, huge drums but yet melodies and hooks galore. This album turned me on to Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc.

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine. First time I heard this cd I had actually borrowed it from the local library. Decided to take LSD one night - kids, don't try this at home - put the cd in and was totally blown away by the sounds coming from my stereo. Must of listened to that cd for 4 straight hours or something and to this day I can still hear some new beat/sound every time I listen to it.

Basehead - Not In Kansas Anymore. Good luck finding this cd at your local store but if you do it's a keeper. Wicked mix of rap/folk/funk rock that predates Rage Against the Machine by a couple of years.

Faith No More - Angel Dust. Definitely in my top ten. Most of my old-school metal-head buddies would say that "The Real Thing" is the better album but I have to disagree. Contains one of my all-time favorite songs, "The Small Victories".

Radiohead - The Bends. Now, I know "Ok Computer" gets all the press but I liked The Bends a lot more because the songs were more straight up rock. It also reminds me of when my best friends first child was born as I was jonesing out on this cd when he called me to tell me the news. So it's got a bit of personal history attached to it as well.

Soul Coughing - El Oso. Years ago I was a huge fan of the tv series "The X-Files" and there was this one character on the show who - I forget his name - was a member of a group called "The Lone Gunmen". Now, I was watching the show and this dude - the blonde guy with the glasses - comes on sporting a Soul Coughing t-shirt. So I decided to check out this band and I really love this album. "Irresistable Bliss" is pretty good as well, if not as polished.

Lately, though, I have been playing Kanye West's "Late Registration" a lot. So many good songs on there. I really don't care for a lot of rap/hip-hop because, well, I'm not comfortable with the rampant disrespect of women contained in a lot of it (ummm, excuse me, do you talk to your mother like that?) and, really, I'm a white guy and I just can't relate to all that gangsta shit. But this cd skirts all that for the most part and I guess it helps that he raps about a more lower-middle class life that I CAN relate to.

Also, The New Pornographer's "Twin Cinema". Why this album has not been a massive radio success is beyond me. Especially in Canada because we have Canadian Content laws that stipulate that x-amount of music on the radio has to be of Canadian origin. First time I heard this album I was kind of like, meh . . . listened to it a second time and something just clicked. So many good songs, so many catchy hooks. D'load "Star Bodies" for a quick taste.

I realize I'll probably eat a lot of shit for rambling on like this but, shit, I have over 400 cds in my collection and music is something I'm really passionate about. I was super-stoked when I saw this thread on here and saw that there are others, like me, who are passionate and knowledgable about music as well. Kudos to the GW community and to whoever started this thread.
